TINSON SHEPHERD, SR
(UNKNOWN-William Shepherd and Ann Wilson?) was born 1808 in
Abbeville Dist, South Carolina, and died 1879 in Oakman, Alabama.
He married MINERVA RABURN. She was born 1814 in Tennessee, and
died 1857 in Oakman, Alabama.
Notes for TINSON SHEPHERD, SR:
My great uncle, Coleman Shepherd, said he had a sister that married
into the Earnest family. Tinson supposedly married again after
Minerva died. That would explain the 22 year difference in death
dates. I got the date off her stone.
Tinson's father is thought to have been James or William Shepherd.
Tinson shows in the 1840 Walker Co tax rolls listed with a wife
named Raburn. He also has two slaves. A James Cain also shows
and is listed as the half-brother of Tinson.
SHEPHERD, TINSON, born in the Abbeville District, South Carolina
in 1808, moved to Walker County about 1827, and on April 19, 1834,
entered government land in Section 5, Township 16, Range 8, south
of Oakman. He spent his entire life on the farm and died there
in 1879, being buried at Liberty Hill. He was married to Minerva
Raburn, who was born in Tennessee in 1814 and died near Oakman
in 1857. Children: John B. Shepherd, who died in the Confederate
service at Atlanta; Elizabeth Shepherd, who married Major John
C. Hutto; Wilson Shepherd, who was born May 2, 1840, and on September
21, 1861, he enlisted at York Post Office as a sergeant in Company
K, Fiftieth Alabama Infantry, under Captain Hutto and served until
severely wounded at Resaca, Georgia; Nancy A. Shepherd, who married
Wilson W. Worthington, of Jasper; James Wiley Shepherd; and Tinson
Shepherd, Jr.

Notes for MINERVA RABURN:
My old notes show that she died in 1857. That date comes from
her tombstone. The 1879 date comes from A History Of Walker Co,
Alabama. I have heard that Tinson was married twice.
Buried at Liberty Hill. Her name could be Rabun.

2. ELIZABETH CAROLINE SHEPHERD (TINSON2, UNKNOWN1) was born
September 21, 1837 in Walker Co, Alabama, and died February 10,
1903 in Walker Co, Alabama. She married JOHN CHAPPELL HUTTO, SR,
CSA, son of JOHN HUTTO and MARTHA EARNEST. He was born August
25, 1830 in Abbeville District, South Carolina, and died May 15,
1887 in Walker Co, Alabama.
Notes for JOHN CHAPPELL HUTTO, SR, CSA:
HUTTO, JOHN C., was born in the Abbeville District, South Carolina
on August 25, 1830, and came to Walker County with his parents
while still a young man. Reared on the farm, he followed that
profession until the outbreak of the Civil War, when he recruited
a company of volunteers for service with the Confederate Army
and was elected captain of Company K, Fiftieth Alabama Infantry.
He was later promoted to the rank of major in the Thirtieth Alabama
Infantry. At the conclusion of the war Major Hutto returned to
his farm in Walker County and later entered the mercantile business
at Marietta.
In 1878 he was elected a Representative in the Legislature and
served for one term, during the sessions of 1878-1879. He was
a Mason and a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. He died
on May 15, 1887, and is buried at Liberty Hill. His wife, Elizabeth
Hutto, born September 21, 1837, died February 10, 1903, and is
also buried at Liberty Hill. She was a daughter of Tinson and
Minerva (Raburn) Shepherd.

3. JUDGE JAMES WILEY SHEPHERD, SR (TINSON2, UNKNOWN1) was
born December 24, 1850 in Oakman, Alabama, and died November 07,
1925 in Jasper, Alabama. He married EUSTACIA PALMER September
18, 1877 in Jasper, Alabama, daughter of ROBERT PALMER and ELIZABETH
WHITE. She was born January 12, 1859 in Corona, Alabama, and died
February 05, 1929 in Jasper, Alabama.
Notes for JUDGE JAMES WILEY SHEPHERD, SR:
SHEPHERD, JAMES WILEY, a son of Tinson and Minerva (Rayburn Shepherd,
was born on his father's farm near Oakman on December 24, 1850.
Educated in the public schools of the county, he grew up on the
farm. He spent three years teaching in rural schools, and twelve
years farming near Oakman and Corona. In 1881 he was elected County
Superintendent of Education, and served until 1887, when he was
elected Sheriff. He served as Sheriff until 1892, and was then
elected Probate Judge, which office he filled until 1912.
After retiring from the office of Probate judge, he entered the
mercantile business in Jasper, and operated the same until his
death on November 7, 1925. On September 18, 1877, he was married
to Eustatia Palmer, a daughter of Robert T. and Elizabeth Ann
(White) Palmer, who was born near Corona on January 12, 1859,
and died in Jasper, February 5, 1929. Children: Willie Lee Shepherd,
who married James S. Freeman; Zack Palmer Shepherd, who married
Ruby Sanford, a daughter of William A. and Willie (Sanders) Sanford,
of Sheffield;
John Carlisle Shepherd, a lawyer of Jasper, who served as Representative
in the Legislature, 1931-34; Robert Herbert Shepherd, a physician
at Townley; Annie Lou Shepherd, who married McDavid McPoland,
of Jasper; and James Wiley Shepherd, Jr., a merchant at Jasper.
